Evidence-led comparison ยท Updated August 25, 2026
Choose the workflow before the smart scale.
Consumer body-composition scales estimate body fat through bioelectrical impedance. Their weight readings may be useful, but the body-fat number should be treated as a device-dependent estimate, not a medical measurement.

A smart scale can add precision to the display without adding accuracy to the estimate
Independent comparisons with DXA have found that consumer smart scales can measure body weight reasonably while producing body-composition estimates with meaningful individual error. Hydration, meals, exercise, skin temperature, device equations, and foot contact can all affect bioelectrical-impedance output.
For Deficit Compass, an uncertain body-fat input makes the Katch-McArdle result uncertain too. Leave body fat blank if you do not have a defensible estimate; the calculator will use Mifflin-St Jeor instead. Do not use a smart-scale percentage to diagnose a condition or make a medical decision.
How this shortlist works
Five workflows, not five claims of clinical accuracy
These options were selected from manufacturer-published features for different workflows: multi-frequency measurement, Garmin integration, a configurable display and simple mode, strength-oriented metrics, and a streamlined app. Deficit Compass did not use Amazon customer ratings, current prices, or commission rates.
Trend, do not diagnoseUse one device under repeatable conditions and compare its direction over time.
Do not cross-compareA percentage from one model should not be treated as interchangeable with another model or with DXA.

Withings lists multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth synchronization, body-composition metrics, and support for multiple recognized users. It fits a household that wants automatic app records.
Limit: multi-frequency sensing does not make the body-fat result equivalent to DXA or suitable for diagnosis.
Garmin lists Wi-Fi synchronization, weight trend, multiple body-composition estimates, up to 16 recognized users, and a weight-only option. It is the clearest fit for someone already using Garmin Connect.
Limit: Garmin's own manual notes that hydration, food, exercise, and time of day can affect body-composition readings.
eufy publishes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a customizable scale display, app tracking, and a simple mode that can disable bioelectrical-impedance measurement. Its support material explicitly describes body-fat output as an approximation.
Limit: read eufy's current safety and simple-mode instructions before use, especially for pregnancy or an implanted medical device.
TANITA lists Bluetooth synchronization plus estimated muscle mass, muscle quality, visceral fat, and other body-composition outputs. The combination is aimed at someone who wants more than a single body-fat trend.
Limit: more metrics create more opportunities to overinterpret normal variation; they remain BIA-derived estimates.
Greater Goods presents Verve as an app-connected scale with automatic synchronization and 13 reported metrics. It fits someone who values a simpler logging flow over a larger connected-device ecosystem.
Limit: the number of displayed metrics is not evidence that each estimate is accurate for an individual.
Follow the manufacturer's safety and setup instructions.
Use the same device, placement, time window, and general conditions.
Keep the raw percentage separate from medical measurements and other brands.
Evaluate a multi-week direction, not a single reading or day-to-day fluctuation.
If weight trend is the only input you need, compare the simpler body-weight scale options before paying for composition features.
Safety and interpretation limits
Bioelectrical-impedance products have device-specific restrictions. Follow the current manual and use weight-only or simple mode when the manufacturer directs it. People who are pregnant, use an implanted medical device, have a relevant medical condition, or need body composition for care should ask a qualified clinician which measurement method is appropriate.
