Editorial policy - Effective August 20, 2026
Show the source, the choice, and the uncertainty.
This policy explains how Deficit Compass separates published evidence from product decisions and how readers can audit or challenge both.
Core standard
Every substantive page should help a reader complete a calorie-planning decision without pretending that an online calculator measures metabolism or provides individualized medical care. Original tools and analyses must publish enough method detail to be reproduced. Health-adjacent claims must be sourced, bounded, and attributed to an accountable publisher or qualified reviewer.
Source hierarchy
- Primary peer-reviewed research and government or professional public-health guidance are preferred for equations, safety claims, and physiological context.
- Systematic reviews are used to summarize bodies of evidence, with limitations retained.
- Commercial calculators and secondary explainers may document product conventions or market comparisons but do not establish medical facts.
- Project heuristics are labeled as Deficit Compass choices and are not presented as validated equations.
Sources are linked near the relevant article or in a clearly labeled source section. A citation does not make an interpretation correct; the text must accurately represent what the source supports.
Authorship and qualified review
Builderfox LLC owns, publishes, and maintains Deficit Compass. The company profile states the scope of that role and does not claim clinical credentials.
When a registered dietitian, physician, or other qualified professional reviews a page, Deficit Compass will publish the reviewer's real name, relevant credential, scope of review, and review date. A general conversation or paid endorsement will not be labeled medical review. Pages awaiting qualified review say so plainly.
Original research and calculators
Original benchmarks publish synthetic or consented inputs, equations, unit conversions, rounding rules, dates, limitations, and downloadable data when practical. Synthetic profiles are labeled and never presented as user outcomes.
Calculator logic distinguishes a primary evidence-based equation from comparison models and project-specific guardrails. A code change that materially changes displayed results must be reflected in the methodology and correction log.
Use of AI and automation
AI may assist with research organization, outlining, drafting, code review, and consistency checks. It is not listed as an author and does not independently approve a health claim. Builderfox LLC is responsible for the final calculations, source claims, disclosures, and page copy published on the site.
Substantive pages include a creation note when a reader would reasonably ask how the analysis or text was produced. Deficit Compass does not use automation to generate large numbers of near-duplicate pages.
Corrections
Formula, unit-conversion, source, privacy, accessibility, and material wording errors can be reported through Contact. Confirmed material corrections are logged with the date, affected page, change, and reason. Cosmetic edits do not require a public entry unless they change meaning.
Commercial independence
Affiliate relationships do not change calculator outputs, editorial conclusions, model ranking, or source selection. Direct retailer and affiliate links do not appear inside forms, primary results, safety messages, or decision-critical controls. A form may include a contextual internal link to a separate buying guide when that guide is relevant to the input.
Comparison guides publish their selection criteria, source manufacturer claims, state material limitations, identify the testing status, and explain who may not need to buy. Any sponsored or affiliate relationship is disclosed where a reader encounters it. Deficit Compass does not use Amazon ratings, prices, availability, or copied marketplace descriptions to create rankings, sell placement in research tables, or present commercial partners as medical endorsements. Read the current affiliate disclosure.
Scope and escalation
Content is written for general adult education. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, eating-disorder history, medical conditions, medication effects, unusual symptoms, and unusually low intake estimates require qualified individualized guidance beyond this site's scope.
